Okkes Sanci was convicted of the manslaughter of Bilal Gilgil 27 who he killed in March 1999.
Okkes Sanci had come to England from Turkey in 1998 and was living with Bilal Gilgil, also from Turkey, in his one bedroom flat that was paid for by the DSS although he also worked at a local restaurant.
Okkes Sanci said that he woke up to find Bilal Gilgil attacking him and he said that he was afraid he was going to be raped and so he beat Bilal Gilgil to death with a brick.
Okkes Sanci said 'He tried to rape me so I hit him. I used a rock'.
Bilal Gilgil's body was discovered on 27 March 1999.
